Logan Bonner threw three touchdown passes, Calvin Tyler Jr. added 161 yards rushing and Utah State defeated Connecticut 31-20 in a season-opener on Saturday. Trailing 14-7 late in the second quarter, Utah State scored 17 points in the final 3:42 to take a 24-14 halftime lead. Robert Briggs scored on a 23-yard run, Bonner connected with Justin McGriff for a 14-yard score and Connor Coles hit a 45-yard field goal. Noe Ruelas kicked field goals of 47 and 54 yards to draw UConn within 24-20 early in the fourth quarter before Bonner led a 75-yard scoring drive, capped by his 11-yard TD pass to Brian Cobbs. A diving interception by Ike Larsen on UConn's next possession helped seal the win.

Connecticut, playing its first game under coach Jim Mora after going 1-11 last season, took a 14-0 lead midway through the first quarter. Nathan Carter rushed for 110 yards on six carries in the period but his fumble in the second quarter led to Utah State's first touchdown. He finished the half with nine carries for 130 yards and 20 for 190 for the game. Bonner finished 20-of-29 passing for 281 yards. Tyler's 161 yards came on 33 carries for Utah State. The Aggies, favored by 23 1/2-points, improved to 13-1 in their last 14 home openers. - Utah State/AP College Football

A lot of wide receiver coaches would surely be a bit nervous about having to replace three athletes who accounted for an impressive 3,329 yards and 31 touchdowns on 206 receptions from a record-setting team, but Kyle Cefalo doesn't seem to be fazed one bit. Gone are All-American Deven Thompkins, Derek Wright and Brandon Bowling, who all caught double-digit scoring passes a year ago, but the cupboard is not bare at Utah State. Justin McGriff, who has started all 20 games he has played in for the Aggies, returns, as does slot target Kyle Van Leeuwen. The defending Mountain West championships also brought in a trio of talented transfers that are expected to make immediate impacts.

Also back for the Aggies is offensive coordinator Anthony Tucker and quarterback Logan Bonner, who broke the single-season program records in passing yards (3,628) and touchdowns (36). Indeed, it's easy to see why Cefalo, who is also the team's passing game coordinator, is optimistic heading into the 2022 campaign. "Honestly, I have all the confidence in the world in this group right now because we've got so much healthy competition out there and we've got some good leadership with Justin, Brian (Cobbs) and Kyle," said Cefalo, who has coached first-team all-conference wideouts in four straight seasons - the first three at Arkansas State. "And then we have a bunch of talent that's just kind of lurking around, and every other day someone else is showing up. And they're competing. It's in a friendly way because they're teammates, but at the same time they're wideouts and they want to play and they want the football, so every day I see them pushing one another and getting better and improving. "So, with where the group is at right now, I honestly couldn't be happier because we've pilled up a lot of good work days together and I'm already seeing the improvement." - Herald Journal Tribune

Football people are fond of "the grind" as a byword for the sport's laborious churn. Nowhere is that churn more pronounced than in fall camp, as the sweltering August days seem to bleed into one another. Bowling Green's grind, like every team's, is beginning to inch toward a close. The season opener at UCLA looms just over two weeks away. And several Falcons have begun to assert themselves in practice, separating themselves from the rest of the flock at a critical juncture in the run-up to Sept. 3. "The first guy I gotta mention is Blaine Spires," outside linebackers coach Sammy Lawanson said last week. "He's really taken his game to the next level." Spires is a junior from Youngstown entering his third year with Bowling Green. As a freshman in 2020, he recorded 11 total tackles in five games; in 2021 he bumped that total up to 30 total tackles in 10 games.

Along with defensive lineman Karl Brooks, Spires was involved in one of the most critical defensive stops of the 2021 season. Early in the fourth quarter against Ohio, the two players stacked up Bobcats quarterback Armani Rogers in the end zone for a safety. The points proved essential in a 21-10 Falcons win. "He's just an all-around complete player who has really studied to get better this offseason," Lawanson said. "He's put a lot of good work in the weight room, and it's really showing on the field." - Idaho Statesman

The first major preseason top-25 college football poll was released Monday. And Iowa found itself on the outside looking in. Despite finishing inside the top 25 in the final rankings of 2021 for the fourth straight year (the longest such streak under coach Kirk Ferentz), the Hawkeyes were unranked in the first USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll of the 2022 season. However, they received the most votes of teams not in the top 25. Within the Big Ten, Iowa was picked to finish second in the Big Ten West behind Wisconsin (which checked in at No. 20) during Big Ten media days. The Hawkeyes return an impressive collection of talent on defense but questions about their offense and special teams unit loom entering fall. Outside of Iowa, four Big Ten teams made the initial poll: Ohio State (No. 3), Michigan (No. 6), Michigan State (No. 14) and Wisconsin. Of the ranked teams, Iowa will play all but Michigan State this season. - Iowa City Press-Citizen

Former four-star running back Jordan Wilmore, once a Utah Ute and a Fresno State Bulldog, is now a Utah State Aggie. Wilmore never officially announced his commitment nor that he signed with Utah State. But it is official. The Lawndale, California, native is on Utah State's roster heading into the 2022 season, part of a running back room that now includes Calvin Tyler Jr. - formerly of Oregon State - John Gentry, Pailate Makakona and Robert Briggs. As it turns out, with the loss of Elelyon Noa - via the transfer portal - Utah State coach Blake Anderson just didn't feel comfortable with the depth the Aggies had at running back, and Wilmore's past was intriguing. "We felt like we needed more opportunity in that room to maybe play by committee a little bit," Anderson said. "Wilmore comes in having played on some Power Five rosters. People in the state are familiar with him. At one point he was listed as the starter at Utah, at least for a game or two." - Salt Lake Tribune
